How to Build a Wood Fence
A wood fence is still my favorite type of fence. Here’s the way I do it step by step.
Step One: Make a straight line with builders/mason's twine. Be sure as you continue to build you keep that string straight and unobstructed.
Step Two: Dig the holes. Possible tools needed would be a post hole digger, a digging rod or if you want to save yourself some time and pain, rent an auger. It’s a good idea to paint a circle on the dirt where you intend to dig the holes. Once the holes are dug, put a shovel full of gravel in the bottom of the hole. This will keep excessive moisture away from the bottom of the post.
Step Three: Plumb and brace the posts in both directions. Use form stakes or grade stakes and your framing boards to save money. Use treated lumber, redwood or cedar for you posts. Don't use doug fir as it will rot.
Step Four: Pour concrete and let it set for a day. Pour it in wet and fill the hole slightly above the grade. Use a stake to work the concrete into the hole and eliminate any voids. NOTE: over time a small crack may develop where the post goes into the concrete. You can come back in a few months and seal this with a concrete caulking.
Step Five: Cut off the tops of the posts. Be sure not to let the string sag when determining where to cut.
Step Six: Frame the fence. Use at least three boards. Again, use treated lumber or lumber that is rot resistant. One board will lay down flat and two on edge. The boards on edge will keep the fence from sagging.
Step Seven: Install the pickets. Galvanized nails or screws if you prefer.
Step Eight: Finishing. Water seal or even paint will keep your fence looking nice for many years.

Building a Porch Swing
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 місяці тому
We built two porch swings using 2x4s and 1 x 6" material we purchased at the Home Depot. This is an easy weekend build you can make with a few basic power tools like a circular saw, jig saw and a hand drill. Of course, if you have a lot more tools, that's fine too use them all. I'm providing a materials list and a cut list but I would suggest cutting as you go. You never know how things are goi...
Cross for Church

We made this stylized cross for the front wall of our church worship center in Whittier, California. It is seven feet tall and 42 inches wide. We made it out of 5/4 inch red oak and ran a piece of 9 ply plywood down the middle that looks like iron when it is all painted up. Material included: 2 pieces of 5/4 red oak 2 7/8" x 84" 2 pieces of 5/4 red oak 2 3/4" x 42" 1 sheet of 9 ply maple plywoo...
How to build and install Floating Shelves
Переглядів 739Рік тому
We made four floating shelves from white oak and mounted them on hardware we purchased. Step #1 Decide on how your shelves will be mounted. We bought hardware intended for the purpose of hanging floating shelves. This is the simplest way but it is also the most expensive. Two other options I recommend are using a small pipe with a pipe flange or simply fastening a narrow strip of wood to the wa...
Installing Pre-fab Garage Cabinets and Storage

We needed to turn a garage into a productive office space and create some efficient storage as well. Step #1 Planning We decided on using a high end prefabricated cabinets with a thermofoil finish. The disadvantage is that you can never paint over them so you are stuck with the finish you ...
Building a Shed
Переглядів 642Рік тому
Myself and a gang of volunteers from our church built five identical wood sheds 12 feet wide and 6 feet deep. Their purpose was for food and recycling collection around our church campus so we needed them to look a bit classier than a normal storage shed. Our foundation or deck we framed with 2"x6" treated lumber and 3/4" treated plywood. Because we were placing the sheds in various places arou...
Children's Car Bed

We made this bed that looks like a Jeep for my grandson, Owen. This was a daddy daughter project that turned out great. For the project we bought: Two sheets of 3/4 inch maple or birch plywood for the sides and wheels One sheet of 1/2 inch MDF for the front, back and grill. Three 2x4" for the axles and fenders Scraps were used for the slats that hold up the mattress. The idea for this project c...
Cutting Circles on the Bandsaw
Переглядів 6092 роки тому
We had to cut several circles of the same size out of 3/4" pine and we determined that the best way to do that was on the bandsaw with a narrow 1/4" blade. I made a sliding jig for my bandsaw to make the process faster and more consistent. Step 1: Cut a piece of 3/4" plywood 14" wide and 16" long.' Step 2: Attach a piece of hardwood to the bottom that fits the groove on your bandsaw table. Abou...
Pick Up Truck Bed Drawers

I built custom fitted drawers for the bottom of my pickup truck. This was a long overdue project because I needed to get more organized and I also need to make it my tools more secure. I cut the top and bottom to fit bet...
How to Glue up Wide Wood Panels and Tops
Переглядів 1,8 тис.2 роки тому
Wide wood tops or panels can be made by gluing up several wood pieces edge to edge. A solid wood top is a good choice for many pieces of furniture such as small coffee tables or end tables. In my case I needed a large wood piece for carving a sign for our shop. For this project you will need bar clamps a good wood glue like "Titebond" and, of course some solid wood planks. It is debatable wheth...
Building a Sound Booth

You will cut the nails between the fascia and the sheeting/ starter boards and leave the flashing in place. The half nails that are left provide enough holding power

I would never use 4x4 posts i use 2-3/8" metal posts never have to worry bout rotting ie rusting out, as for Douglas fir wood 2x4s etc is ok to use as long as they are primed & painted termites dont like any wood that it primed & painted.

Hi! I’m looking at the NuCore LVP over ceramic tile. Any concern about seeing grout lines over time? I’ve seen where some use a moisture barrier or underlayer of cork to further support longevity. Any advice?

    • @BobsTwoCarGarage
      @BobsTwoCarGarage Місяць тому

As long as the tiles are pretty flat you should not see lines. The barrier will also help but not necessary for moisture. I was pushing the limits of what is considered “flat” on that video.

You are using everything I learned never to use on teak-power wash and teak oil. Teak oil feeds mold and mold loves teak. I know about teak and mold because I have a house full of 50 year old teak furniture and a boat about the same age with moldy teak (except for the varnished interior teak on the boat.) My advise would be to varnish your teak outdoor furniture and keep it in the shade or cover it when not using it to protect the varnish.

I am assuming you never put a floor in it right? So when the way you built the roof. Couldn't you drill some seep holes to allow the water to drain? I would have lids on my cans anyways even in a enclosure. But I drill holes in my cans also so even if water gets into the cans it would drain still. Looks great btw we will be building one like this here soon dam animals never quit eating our food.

Wouldn’t you want an air gap to dampen vibration between the two rigid foam pieces?? Like soft foam damper furring strips seems like it wd have improved the STC. Has anyone used Homasote in lieu plywood or drywall as a sheathing? I wd think the Homasote has better sound dampening and is fire resistant. Insulated glass w/ good STC acoustical insulation properties) ratings also has an air gap (or is argon gas filled) vs being laminated together. I think you can buy insulated glazing but it shd have soft gaskets or setting caulk to prevent rattling /vibrations in the frame.
